At left, Eugene and Joyce Marten bought the Verde Independent in 1969 and published it for 10 years before selling to Western Newspapers, which is now Western News&Info. Marten is credited with modernizing the newspaper with a web offset press and a computer typesetting system. Center, hired as an advertising representative in 1972, Dick Larson was publisher of the Verde Independent for about two decades. Right, Joe Zepeda (with his wife Armida at their Clarkdale home) worked for the Verde Independent as a pressman for 35 years before working at the Prescott Courier for another 5 years.

Verde Independent at 65: No plans to retire

Still using original building but nothing else is the same

The Verde Independent Newspaper celebrated its 65th birthday February 12. Not surprisingly, much has changed - not only with the Verde Independent but also with the newspaper's coverage area.
