CAMP VERDE - Besides serving the Town of Camp Verde as a council member, Robin Whatley is an eighth-grade English and history teacher at American Heritage Academy in Camp Verde. Whatley says she has attended council meetings since 2006, before running for her first term in 2009.
"I feel I was qualified for the job by my regular attendance at council meetings for three years prior, but my best qualification has been and still is my love of the Town of Camp Verde and its people."
Bugle: How long have you been in the Verde Valley?
Whatley: I have been here for 30 years. And I am a life-long resident of Yavapai County.
Bugle: What is your favorite place in the Verde Valley?
Whatley: Coming up I-17 from the valley, you see a beautiful stretch of Camp Verde. And of course, my home [is also my favorite place]. I committed to buying my house without ever going inside. The yard was so beautiful, with weeping willow, catalpas, pecan trees and grass, surrounded by Myrtle vines.
Bugle: What are some of your hobbies?
Whatley: Going to and supporting town events, and traveling. My bucket list includes going to every continent. Antarctica may be a problem.
Bugle: Do you have a family? Spouse? Kids?
Whatley: Jimmy, my husband, is an auto mechanic and my biggest supporter. My oldest son is Kevin and he works for ADOT. He is always there when needed. My second son is Paul, who is a JAG officer with the Air Force. He has just returned home from a deployment at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He is currently stationed in Colorado Springs, Colo. My only daughter, Lauren, is a pharmacy technician and my best friend. And my youngest son is Colin, who is currently looking for work. Anybody got a job?
Bugle: Do you have any pets?
Whatley: We recently lost our precious dog Pokey after many illnesses. We just adopted a dog from the Golden Bone rescue. His name is Jack and, of course, Jack's best friend is our cat Pistol.
Bugle: What music is in your car right now?
Whatley: Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Tears for Fears and Kenny Wayne Sheppard.
Bugle: What is your favorite food?
Whatley: Seeds and nuts.
Bugle: What is your most embarrassing moment?
Whatley: Which one? I teach eighth graders!
Bugle: Is there anything else people do not know about you that you would like to share?
Whatley: Finally, I am a grandmother. My son Paul and his wife, Rebekah had their first child (and my first grandchild)! I am now a member of the Grandma Club!
