Editorial: The election is over, let's give politics a rest

Given the divisiveness of the political landscape today, it's probably too much to ask that we accept the results and support the winners in Tuesday's election.

You can't help but wonder if that would make us a better, stronger, more unified America instead of the mean-spirited, hate-driven, divided country that we have become.

As is the case in any election, the choice we make is to either support or overthrow an existing political regime. In America, we do this through a relatively peaceful process. We vote. In other countries, such a change comes only through violence and loss of life.

So, if we can be that civil through the basic process of voting, why do we insist on being so ugly and spiteful during the campaign process. We're all guilty. The politicians. The media. The Everyman. Our campaign process today is not far removed from the World Wrestling Federation.

But now that it's over, let's give it a break, folks. Step away from it for a while. Give your brain a rest. Go take a long walk. Enjoy the scenery. Refuse to talk politics, for at least a week.

And, it's probably too much to ask, but let's try to accept the results and support the winners.

Rosemary, I'm sorry you can't appreciate sarcasm. I was pointing out how silly Mr. Rico's post was. Mr. Rico's post is as silly as those who think the world is coming to an end on Dec. 21st.

No one person can ruin this country. That is why we have the three branches of government, for checks and balance. I wasn't exactly elated when George Bush won in 2,000 and then again in 2004. But I didn't pronounce that evil had triumphed.

"now that evil has triumphed"? "watch the death of a Republic from within"? "congratulations Tea Party on subverting the Republican Party"? Did you three forget that if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem (big time!)

Well the American people have spoken.

We have sold our freedom for baubles, empty promises and lies. Now for the long twilight of the American Dream.

Time for those of us who still believe in Freedom to hunker down and pass the torch to future generations. Time to watch the death of a Republic from within.

Our Grand Children and Great Grand Children shall curse our names. Good men have refused to speak and evil has triumphed.

God Bless the memory of America.

Was in Cottonwood library election day looking through a new coffee table book of pictures from the Birmingham segregation years and reminded again that the states with the most virulent opposition to civil rights were the same red states of today resisting change that benefits all and not just the most wealthy and powerful. Forget the break from politicking, for the post-election analysis has just begun and the Republican leadership can start by acknowledging that the many crackpots on their side disenfranchised many moderate
Republicans and Independents which helped reelect President Obama. Congratulations Tea Party on subverting the Republican Party.
