Commentary: County Attorney needs to make decision in bicycle fatality case
It's often said that the wheels of justice move slowly, but with certain cases in Yavapai County one can't help but question if they move at all.

Commentary: Yavapai College does under-serve the Verde Valley
Occasionally, a skeptic appears in this newspaper who questions the view that the Verde Valley is being under-served by Yavapai Community College. To this doubting Thomas, I say: "Just look at the facts."

Gay marriage not 'reproductive'? Hogwash
My response to a recent article in the Bugle/Independent, "Arizona uses reproductive ability to support gay marriage ban," July 23, 2014:

Reporter Howard Fischer: Attorneys for the state are telling a federal judge there's a good reason Arizona won't let gays marry: They can't reproduce, at least not without the help of a third person.

This is pure hogwash.

Commentary: 'Don't Worry Be Happy' - Really?
By now most of us have come to the conclusion that after 15 years of drought and decades of population expansion the Western United States is experiencing water supply problems that will not be overcome without changing how our water resources are managed.

After more than a year of contentious debate, could Congress be any more divided over the issue of immigration? The answer is yes.

Commentary: Everyone, even ranchers, should pay fair share of taxes
As the Yavapai County Assessor since 2009, I'm not used to making headlines. I'm not much of a "politician" and I'm certainly not used to taking on powerful political interests or armies of lawyers.

Commentary: Is Obama really the worst president?
Wow. A reputable poll shows that the public believes Barack Obama is the worst president since World War II.

Commentary: Failing the test on basic economics
Here's a quiz: Which politician favors reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank, which aids American companies that compete in world markets and last year helped support $37 billion in exports and 205,000 domestic jobs while actually turning a profit?

Commentary: Is there an American patriotism gap?
Despite prolonged economic troubles, deep political divisions, headaches abroad, and a sense that the country is on the wrong track, the heartening news this summer is that a majority of people say they often feel proud to be an American.

Commentary: What's wrong with soccer
Have you been watching the World Cup? I have, even though I don't know the rules, or if there are any -- beside the obvious one that you can't use your hands, except when you can use your hands. But mostly it seems you can't.

Commentary: Great War Century - An assassination and unintended consequences
Few Americans knew what an archduke was, and even fewer cared. Only the most well-traveled could find Sarajevo on a map.

Commentary: Take action while the opportunity is available
There is some good news concerning water issues in the Southwest. The Natural Resources Conservation Services has indicated that snowmelt in the four upper basin states of the Colorado River Basin will help Lake Powell rise about 40 feet over the next few months.

Commentary: Support of traditional marriage is not to be confused with hate speech
"All day long, some of them tended to the dying and to their burial, countless numbers with no one to care for them. Others gathered together, from all parts of the city, a multitude of those withered from famine, and distributed bread to them all."

Commentary: Iraq crisis inspires Chicken Little talk
Here's an amazing fact that most of the Chicken Little rhetoric about the crisis in Iraq fails to take into account: The city of Mosul, population 1.5 million, fell to ISIL insurgents because two divisions of Iraq's army (30,000 soldiers) shed their uniforms, abandoned their weapons, and fled from 800 Sunni religious extremists in pickup trucks.

Commentary: Refocus eyes on the big prize - alcohol abuse
There's been a lot of discussion about marijuana lately. Does marijuana have medicinal value? Should we decriminalize its possession? Should it be legalized, like alcohol?

Commentary: Does marijuana use impact education?
We are hearing considerable propaganda that marijuana is harmless and should be legalized. In November of 2010, Arizona voters legalized the medical use of marijuana and several states have recently legalized recreation use of marijuana. So does this impact education?
