Commentary: Thanks to those who serve selflessly, transparently, tirelessly
If being an educator in Arizona presents challenges inherent to the prevailing "conservative" fiscal policy of starving public education, while feeding privatized prisons, I can only imagine the stress is compounded exponentially for elected members of educational governing boards.

Commentary: Cowards, heroes and free speech
In 1967 Carlos Hathcock was a wanted man ($30,000 reward dead) for killing so many men. Hathcock was a Marine sniper (93 confirmed kills, 200 or more unofficial kills).

Commentary: King Holiday a path of painful memories for Arizona
Folks in Arizona have come to accept Monday's Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday as a fitting memorial to a great American.

Commentary: Let's work together for a healthy Verde River
It's been really interesting and rewarding to see a number of letters to this paper recently expressing concern over the fate of the Verde River!

Commentary: No one remembers who finished second
What changed?

By the end of World War II, Americans felt like there were no boundaries to what our nation could accomplish if we set our minds to it.

Commentary: My cat's not keeping up with the market
Every day, thousands of people post adorable videos on YouTube of their cats doing cutesy-wootsy, puddy-wuddy adorable things, while our cat just sits there waiting to be fussed over.

Commentary: A look back at 2014 through rose-colored glasses
With the new year approaching, everyone is taking a look back at 2014. What they're seeing isn't always pretty, but the truth is that there was plenty of good news in the past 12 months that should be appreciated. So let's take one more look back at 2014, but this time through slightly rose-colored glasses.

Commentary: Obama's 4th quarter off to an interesting start
President Obama's strongest detractors have never decided if he's a tyrant or a weakling. Right up to the 2014 midterm elections, Republicans scorned his fecklessness and inability to lead.

Commentary: Give the gift of food this Christmas season
The Christmas season seems to start earlier every year. Last month, a neighbor put up twinkling silver lights, and the day after Thanksgiving, we saw cars carrying trees on their roofs.

Commentary: 8 things the Verde Valley taught me
I lived and worked in the Verde Valley for 16 years. It was a time of great changes for the area, and I was privileged to get to report on so many of these transformations, great and small.

Commentary: With immigration action, Obama moves to cement his coalition and another legacy
As things stand now, President Obama will leave the White House with two legacies. The first legacy is historic: Obama will always be the nation's first black president. The second is policy: He is the creator of Obamacare, the national health care system Democrats had tried to enact for decades.

Commentary: You had me at 'mass murderer'
I'm finally getting married! For a while I thought it was never going to happen; I'm 26 and the last one in my group who's still single. I was starting to think I'd never meet Mr. Right.

Commentary: Verde Valley Humane Society: A good investment in our community
Outside my window the leaves are changing. The temperatures are falling and I can see my elder foster dog, Bella, contentedly sprawled out in a patch of sunshine in the yard. The Holidays are approaching along with thoughts of giving and sharing. As you consider donating to a worthy cause this season, please keep the Verde Valley Humane Society (VVHS) uppermost in your mind.

Commentary: Trials of the unhandy man
Sue can always find some silly excuse to go to the building supply store. Like: If we don't fix the leak in the roof, the living room ceiling will collapse. If we don't replace the three missing risers on the front porch steps, someone will trip, break a leg and sue us. If we don't fix the freezer, all the food will melt and spoil.

Commentary: It's time to give workers a raise
American workers need a raise, and there's one simple way to boost incomes at the lower end of the pay scale: Increase the federal minimum wage, which has been stuck at $7.25 an hour since 2009.

Commentary: Voters continue to polarize themselves by media habits
USA Today's Rem Rieder covered a new study by the Pew Research Center concerning the way Americans get their news about government and politics ("Too many want 'facts' tinged red or blue," 10/26/14). Pew's findings aren't a shocker - that most people tend to watch news outlets tending toward their own politics.
