CAMP VERDE - Everywhere you looked in the Camp Verde gym Saturday, Cowboys wrestlers sent a message. The CV team set the record for most points scored at Verde Duals: 740.5. They beat the second place team (Marana Mt. View) by over 200 points.

It was the 13th straight win for CV at Verde Duals, but this one was different than in years past. Eleven Cowboys wrestlers made it to the Verde Duals finals and eight of them earned first.

Matt Mejia, Alex Casillas, Isaiah McReynolds, Ryan Allred, Michael Nelson, Alex Anzar, Heath Carroll, and Elmer Ruiz all went undefeated in the tournament.

At one point during Nelson's finals match at 138 pounds, the gym turned against Camp Verde. Nelson tweaked his opponents' arm and the crowd thought the move was illegal. Nelson was winning the match with an aggressive style, new for him in his sophomore season. After Nelson won the match, his Marana Mt. View opponent pushed him, upset after an emotional contest. A lesser competitor would have swung on the kid, but Nelson shrugged it off, walked to the center of the mat, and went about his business like usual.

CV Head Coach Bob Weir preaches to his kids about respect. He wants his athletes to earn it by giving it, and the end of Nelson's match was a good example of that emphasis paying off.

"Our team is a good bunch of kids that work hard and they've got a lot of heart. They stay together and they never quit. I like their never-die instinct," said Weir after the points were tallied Saturday. On the crowd turning against Camp Verde, Weir said, "That's something we're trying to learn to get used to. Sunnyside used to have a shirt that said, 'everyone loves to hate Sunnyside wrestling' and it's true. When you build a winning program, everybody hates when you're dominating. We've got a bunch of great kids that don't deserve boos because they work their butts off, but if that's what comes with winning, we can handle it."

Isaiah McReynolds and Ryan Allred earned Most Outstanding Wrestler awards along with Bailey Janis from Marana Mountain View.
"I thought every champion on our team was deserving of an outstanding wrestler award," said Weir. "Elmer Ruiz pinned ever kid he faced. Heath Carroll defeated two state placers and a state champion. Anzar beat a state runner up. Our two freshmen, Casillas and Mejia, wrestled outstanding. I think every kid deserved it, but coaches from other teams vote, and Allred and McReynolds certainly deserved the honor as well."

Defending division IV state champion St. Johns is the biggest threat to Camp Verde capturing a team title. The Redskins did not attend Verde Duals this year; it would have been a bloodier tournament if they did. We'll have to wait to see how the teams matchup, but Camp Verde looks awfully good right now.

Could they be the best CV team ever? Better even than the 2005 squad? If they want that title they've got a lot of work to do.
"The 2005 team was one of the best we've ever had, but I have to tell you, this team right here is well on its way to break more records," said CV coach Mario Chagolla. "It all comes down to state. In '05 we had five state champions. If this team wants to say they're better, they need to make the statement at Tim's Toyota."

The next tournament for the Cowboys is Moon Valley Dec. 21-22.
"Moon Valley is a 32-team meat grinder. We'll find out who can mix it up with the big boys," said Chagolla.

NOTE: Ryan Allred came into Verde Duals having pinned every opponent this season, and he pinned in every match leading up to 132-pound Verde Duals final. He settled for a Tech Fall in that match (a 15-point win).

Here are the Camp Verde results from the 19th annual Verde Duals.

Absolutely no way has there been a team that is or was better than the 2005 Camp Verde Wrestling team. Camp Verde has YET to win the Moon Valley tournament in Phoenix since 2005. I love Camp Verde but false statements about what I my team and I in 2005 worked for I will defend.
