Signatures submitted for sales tax initiative

CAMP VERDE - Supporters of a citizen-initiated half-cent sales tax increase submitted 470 signatures on Monday to have the question put on the November ballot.

Before it can be officially placed on the ballot, the county will need to verify that at least 396 of the signatures are valid.

The initiative calls for allocating one-quarter-cent sales tax to fund construction of a new library and one-quarter-cent to fund construction of long-awaited ball fields, amenities and infrastructure on the Town's 118-acre park site off State Route 260 and McCracken Lane.

Organizer Charlie German says he feels confident the group will have the necessary amount of signatures to put it on the ballot

"We have an 18 percent cushion and I have been told by the clerk's office that a 10-percent rejection rate would be high," German says.

According to Deputy Town clerk Virginia Jones, the Town should know within a week to 10 days if the petitions had enough valid signatures.

German also says he is fairly confident that the voters will ultimately approve the measure.

"I think once the public realizes the benefit to be derived from both projects they will come to support it. We outgrew our library some time ago. And as for the ball fields, I think anyone who has been around here for any length of time will tell you they are well past overdue. That happened years ago.

"I think most of Camp Verde residents agree that nothing is happening and nothing will happen with either project until we do it ourselves. Here's our chance," German says.

A proposed one-cent tax increase, which the Town Council had previously voted to refer the public, will be the subject of a special session scheduled for 6:30 p.m. this evening in the council chambers.

The council will have an opportunity to decide if it wants to designate any of the revenue from its one-cent sales tax increase for anything other than the general fund before it considers a resolution that will officially send it to the voters.

The Town has until July 23 to publish a call for vote on their proposal if it is to appear on the November ballot, according to Jones.

JUNE T SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE OTHER "SHEEP" WHO BELIEVE THAT THERE WILL BE AN END TO THIS TAX AND THAT THERE REALLY IS A TOOTH FAIRY! THE CHANCE OF THIS TAX ENDING IS A JOKE AND IT BEING USED FOR THE INTENDED BOGUS REASON IS AN EVEN BIGGER JOKE. WE NEED MANY THINGS IN CAMP VERDE TO PROVIDE AN INCOME FOR THE TOWN AND THE PARK AND LIBRARY SHOULD NOT EVEN BE ON THE RADAR! I WOULD ENCOURAGE EVERYONE IN CAMP VERDE WITH HALF A BRAIN TO VOTE AGAINST THIS. THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR FRILLS! JUNE T. -BUY YOUR KIDS A BOOK AND LET THEM PLAY IN YOUR BACK YARD. IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TAX PAYERS TO PROVIDE RRECREATION FOR YOUR KIDS.

How much denial can this towns leadership be in??? Have they looked at Main St and Finny Flat---Empty shops and churches moving in to vacant store fronts is not a good sign for any town!!!!!! Instead of making it more difficult for businesses to sell here how about making it easier and then when times are better you will have to business base to support both projects-------Funny how a ball field is more important than a teen center!!!!This towns priorities get worse and worse with each year!

Im still waiting for the Bugle to do a story on exactly what each tax proposal would do. Specifically the fact that the half cent tax would move the entrance of the park at a significant cost (a fact that its supporters have never openly discussed and did not disclose to most of those who signed the petition). Camp Verde voters should be as informed as possible before they vote on these initiatives.z

That statememt about not funding something because you won't use it does not make any sense. It is like saying I don't want my tax money to go to fund the street you live on because I won't use it.
There will be an end to the tax. When the projects are complete the tax stops. I suppose you voted against Prop 100 (the 1cent tax for the schools) too.

When did we become a town that can afford to drive people to shop in other town because it is cheaper and the sales tax is lower.

I'll agree that the proposed projects are probably worthy of completion but when did it become the responsibility of the public to fund them. Especially since only a few of the public will the use them.

I am against any tax increase that does not have an end date and a guarantee that the money won't be reallocated to other projects.
