CAMP VERDE - For the past 10 years, Camp Verdeans have celebrated National Night Out on the soccer field behind Town Hall.
This year, the annual affair is headed downtown.
"It seemed more fitting to put it on a block," says Deputy Dave Freeman of the Camp Verde Marshal's Office. "We thought it would be more of a block party-type atmosphere, more visual upfront."
Camp Verde's National Night Out will be held Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Main Street between First and Head streets. The event began as an effort to promote the Block Watch program. Deputy Freeman has overseen the Town's National Night Out since its inception 11 years ago. He says the event focuses on positive interactions with law enforcement.
"Too often when the police shows up, we're dealing with crime, so it's not a positive situation," he says. "We like that this is a positive interaction in the community. It's a great opportunity for people to meet the deputies who serve them, as well as other law enforcement. People can have questions answered about the community, law enforcement, block watch."
Camp Verde Kiwanis, Cliff Castle Casino and Camp Verde Johnny Rockets will sponsor the event. The Kiwanis will help fund the event, Cliff Castle Casino will provide hot dogs and chips, and Johnny Rockets will provide the hamburgers.
Marshal Nancy Gardner says the event also helps the community recognize which resources are available when in crisis.
"Our goal is to have the safest community possible, [for local law enforcement] to work together, share information and to be the eyes and ears of the Town," Gardner says. "It's a community working together."
