Pit bull attacks donkey, killed by deputy

Jon Hutchinson
Staff Reporter

CAMP VERDE -- The Camp Verde Marshal's Office reports that one of its deputies had to put down a neighborhood pit bull after it attacked a miniature donkey and critically mauled the animal Saturday. The dog had reportedly also threatened people.

Camp Verde dispatch received numerous 911 calls concerning the attack and the dog's aggressive nature.

The attack occurred in a field and continued after the officer arrived, leaving the deputy no option but to dispatch the dog, according to the report.

The Marshal's Office says the same dog had been reported at large twice in the past and its owner had been cited for allowing a vicious dog at large.

A veterinarian brought to the scene on Doug's Park Road advised the owners to put the donkey to sleep as well, since the injuries were so severe.

The dog's owner, 26-year-old Steven Spearman, had been cited twice in July. In one case, the dog was fighting with another. In the second case, Spearman was alleged to have caused abuse to the animal.

After being in the animal world of work over the past 6 years as a vet tech. I can tell you that pit bulls in general are not a trusting breed. It does not play into the idea that it's how there raised. Sorry attacking is a trait not a skill they are trained for. As far as this pit bulls owner goes, I lived across from him for a period of time and attempted to offer care to a pit bull of his that he so carelessly left in a fenced in yard with a way to big of a chain attached to his collar and then hung himself from trying to escape. These owners should not be allowed to own another animal of any kind in their life time.

Good ol camp verde TRASH.
Anyhow:
There are MANY pitbulls out there that are not bred to attack... ITS ALL IN HOW THEY ARE RAISED. And given this steven kids background...being a small town and knowing the PUNK that he his... and the police being called out for animal abuse before.... I wouldnt be one bit shocked if he trained his animal to attack. Did you watch the news clip.... hes a punk!!! take responsibilty for you actions.
Shayna.... equines... any in nature given it be a donkey or horse, go into shock rather quickly... and more than likely would not have survived 24 hours post attack... so no. he would not have survived. You also need to take responsibility for the dogs actions.

I haven't had any problems with owning a pitbull. Also any dog can be aggressive and attack something.

Shayna, you say the dog was never beat in your care. I believe you. I also seriously doubt you raised it to attack donkeys.

I'm also curious of what you think about the "It's the dog, not the owner" statement now.

Pit bulls: They're natural killing machines. No Training needed.

Ok we'll guess what the dog didn't kill the donkey the donkey was not in that bad of shape yeah the dinky had some gashes but the donkey would have lives it was the donkeys owners choice to put the donkey down and in all reality they made him suffer more they were sure to lie about a vet coming out and euthanizing the donkey they put a bullet in the donkeys back face and then in the head if you are just going to go off of the media and believe the one side that is on you Steven was not charged with anything but vicious dog he will take responsibility for what the dog did but that dog was never beat in our care so before you decide to think you know the whole story check with both parties!

It is also notable that many pit bull owners/lovers seem to have problems with the english language, spelling and punctuation. Shayna...

I was talking to the owners neighbors and they have told me the owner of those pit bulls deliberately abuses them to make them vicious. If true this person is a criminal.

I wondered how long it would take for the pit lovers to start the "It's not the dogs fault" letter campaign. Shayna, the story undoubtedly has many different versions, but 1 fact remains and is indisputable.. The donkey was a beloved pet, and it is now dead. Killed by a dog intentionally bred for killing. If my Heeler decided to herd the neighbors sheep, that is understandable. If my dachsand digs in the garden, again, that is what he was bred for. Why is anyone suprised when a pit kills someone, something?
The part I find the most amazing is the fact that virtually ALL pit defenders are very angry. For every letter condemming the attack, there will be 3 defending the dog. When that fails, they resort to name calling to make their point. The facts may be open to interpretation, but the result of attack is not. Please, if you want to taken seriously, present your version of the facts, don't attack the messenger. Until then you are just another angry pit lover.

Charges should be against the owner of the animal. And shayna, police report is a little different from "hear say". If the moron would have secured his dog, we shouldn't be reading this. Some people shouldn't own animals.
