Football is on the horizon
Football in the Verde Valley last season brought a number of exciting story lines to Friday nights under the lights at both Camp Verde and Mingus Union High Schools. Although the two teams had different outcomes to their seasons, they both improved throughout the season, and this season should be more of the same for both programs.

KC's to host Self-Defense class for Camp Verde reading program
On July 13 at 1 p.m. the Camp Verde Community Library's summer Reading Program will host KC's Family Tae Kwon Do at the community gym in Camp Verde. The 45-minute self-defense class will include demonstrations and performances by KC's Black Belts and the X-TEAM demonstration group.

Robinson tops Casillas for Regional Title, Wesley Loveall gets win for Larson's gym
Saturday night brought 10 Verde Valley fighters to Cortez High School in Phoenix for another installment of the Ultimate Combat Fighting Challenge. Two of those fighters, Manuel Robinson of Dragon's Eye and Ezequiel Casillas of Golden Cobra squared off for a Regional Title in a battle that went all five two-minute rounds.

Camp Verde hosts 7-team 7-on-7 competition
For the next three Wednesday's in a row the Camp Verde Cowboys will be hosting a 7-on-7 competition along with a Big Man competition with schools from around the area as they continue to prepare for the 2017 regular season that will begin with a scrimmage against Payson on August 19.

Camp Verde Football got their busy summer started on Wednesday when they headed to Tonopah Valley for their first 7 on 7 scrimmage of the summer. Starting June 8, the Cowboys will host 7 on 7's and Big Man Competitions every Wednesday throughout the month of June, with a common start time of 5 p.m.

Yavapai beats Iowa Western 7-3, advances to national title game
For the first time in a decade, Yavapai College's baseball team has qualified for the championship of the JUCO World Series after notching a 7-3 victory over NJCAA No. 4-ranked Iowa Western in an elimination game on Thursday, June 2, at Suplizio Field.

Five-time national champion San Jacinto-North of Texas (3-1 record in the Series) lost to Chattahoochie Valley of Alabama (3-1), 13-3, in the winners' bracket final Thursday night. San Jac and Chattahoochie will play again at 6 p.m. today, June 3, to decide which team faces Yavapai (4-1) in the national title game at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 4.

Ezequiel Casillas gets title shot
They established themselves on the wrestling mat at Camp Verde High School, proving that hard work and determination can lead to success. Alex Casillas was a three-time State Champion for Camp Verde and had a shot at becoming the next four-timer if it wasn't for an injury he suffered two weeks before the Division IV Section I tournament.

Cowboys show strength at Weekend Wars
The turnout for Weekend Wars during Memorial Day was outstanding. We had visitors from the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Arizona. They bring much Tourism monies needed to sustain our local economy.

It is no secret that the production of first-class wrestlers at the elementary and middle school levels is critical to the future success of the Camp Verde High School Wrestling program.

Camp Verde's Logan Conrad and Wyatt Howe voted to Division IV 2nd Team
In the 2016 season the Camp Verde baseball program made its' return to the State Playoffs with a bang. They finished the season with a 19-12 overall record and a 6-2 record in Division IV Section I play, just missing out on a Section I Championship if not for a close 10-9, nine inning game loss to the Northland Prep Academy Spartans.

Seniors Taya Smith and Paige Church earn Division IV 2nd Team honors
In the past two years the Camp Verde Cowboys Softball program has won a total of 53 games and have never lost in sectional play. In the 2015 season they were victims of an underdog story after they charged into the State Playoffs with 23 wins and only five losses.

"One day my dad asked me if I would rather be a singer or a bowler," 42-year-old Dan Razo said after finishing up another rep on the bench press at the Cottonwood Recreation Center. "I told him neither, I want to be a weight-lifter. Cause that's my No. 1 goal, to be a weightlifter."

Cowboys sweep All-Section nods in Division IV Section I
Both the Camp Verde Baseball team and Softball team turned in excellent seasons in 2016.

The Softball team found their redemption from 2015 as they beat the Morenci Jr./Sr. Wildcats 3-2 to advance to the Division IV State Championship.

Several of our Girl's went undefeated today. Grappling has helped them in many ways and not just on the mat. To name but a few, Wrestling has taught them how to take care of their body, how to function in a team environment, how to become a competitor in a man's world, how to survive, and how to persevere.

Watkins brings State Title back to Camp Verde
Senior thrower Alyssa Watkins highlighted the Division IV State Championship Meet for the Camp Verde Cowboys, winning the State Title in Discus with a throw of 110-feet and 11-inches. Watkins edged out Allison Sluga, who took second with a throw of 109 feet and 8 inches.

No. 2-seeded Camp Verde battled their way to the AIA Division IV State Championship a come-from-behind, 12-5, victory over Buckeye Union and then they got their revenge on the Morenci Wildcats with a 3-2 semi-final win.

Cowboys fall to top-seeded Eagles in Quarterfinals
No. 8-seeded Camp Verde took the lead in the top of the 5th inning, jumping ahead of No. 1-seeded Desert Christian, 4-3, with a four-run inning.

It was Rafael Zapata and Easton Braden who got the Cowboys in business as both plated two-runs in the big inning.
