Car wash raises $900 for 13 year old Camp Verde girl
In May, 13-year-old Camp Verde resident Bailey Jager, left, discovered she has Alopecia areata, a condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Her friend Sara Jewell, 13, also of Camp Verde, set up a car wash to raise money for Bailey to buy a human hair wig. The July 18 car wash at Rio Verde Plaza raised $900 for Bailey. VVN/Bill Helm

CAMP VERDE - Back in May, Bailey Jager first noticed something wrong with her hair.

A lot of it was missing.

"One day, my mom was doing my hair for me," says the 13-year-old Camp Verde resident. "I don't let her do my hair that often.

"[She found] bald spots."

Bailey has what is called Alopecia areata. Her doctor told her that the hair falling out could be an isolated incident. Or it could happen again.

Most young girls would feel embarrassed if their hair was falling out. And Bailey was no different. Bailey spends the majority of her summer days at home, in her room. Her 9-year-old sister Makayla says she feels lonely when Bailey won't come out of her room. But she understands.

"I try to tell her that I love her," Makayla says.

Thanks to several of her friends, including 13-year-old Sara Jewell, Bailey came out of her room Friday. She even left her home for the morning. On July 18, the youngsters held a car wash at Rio Verde Plaza to raise money for their friend. And Bailey wanted to help her friends help her.

Bailey wants to buy a human hair wig.

In barely four hours, the children raised $900 by washing 26 cars and from other donations, said Nancy Tackitt, Sara's grandmother. Tackitt says she is proud of both Bailey for believing in herself and of Sara and all the other children for helping a friend.

"I am proud of the young lady [Sara] is turning into and her compassion for others," Tackitt says. "She has a heart of gold."

Camp Verde resident Brian Fernando, 17, was one of about 10 youngsters who helped with the car wash Friday.

"She's my friend. It feels good to help out, to do good for the community and help somebody in need," Brian says. "Makes me feel good helping somebody out."

Hi I'm Bailey's mom, and I just wanted to add that Bailey has a fundraising website where you can go and read her full story, leave her a message, donate and get updates on how she's doing.
To everyone who came to the car wash and to Nancy Tackitt & Sara thank you so much for your support, kindness and generosity. It means so much to our family and to Bailey.

Bill Helm thank you for helping Bailey by writing this article.
