Valley News Update: Roadwork ahead

Road project resumes in Oak Creek Canyon's switchbacks

As the battle against the Slide Fire in Oak Creek Canyon winds down, the ongoing highway-improvement project along the "switchbacks" section of State Route 89A will resume.

The previously-scheduled closure of the three-mile stretch of SR 89A between the Pine Flat Campground and the Vista scenic overlook south of Flagstaff will remain in place for several weeks while crews remove loose rocks above the switchbacks, complete other safety improvements and resurface the highway.

SR 89A will reopen to traffic before the Fourth of July weekend.

Detour Info: While the switchbacks section along SR 89A is closed, ADOT recommends drivers use Interstate 17 and State Route 179 to travel between Flagstaff and Sedona.

The full closure of the highway had been scheduled to start on May 27, but crews were temporarily pulled off the project more than a week ago due to the Slide Fire.

For more information about this project, call the ADOT information line at 855-712-8530 or email at Projects@azdot.gov.

Roadwork on 12th Street in Cottonwood

Monday through Thursday, June 2-5, there will be construction in the 12th and Fir Street intersection. The roadway at the intersection will remain open throughout the duration of the construction. Flaggers will be present. Delays can be expected.

Please obey all traffic control signs while in the area.

Roadwork in VOC and Verde Village

As part of the continuing pavement preservation project, chip seal, fog seal and striping of the newly chip-sealed Verde Valley School Road and various roadways on the west side of Village of Oak Creek will occur June 2-4

Beginning June 4, and continuing through June 9, various locations in the Cottonwood area (Verde Village Subdivision) will receive pavement preservation of chip seal, fog seal and new striping.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane throughout construction in all locations. Expect a 15-minute delay.
