CAMP VERDE - Folks who were close to Bea Richmond know she was a big supporter of the arts, education and exercise.
When Richmond passed away in 2012, her friends with the Camp Verde Kiwanis wanted to find a way to recognize her - and to raise money for Camp Verde children's music programs.
In December 2012, the Camp Verde Kiwanis sponsored the first Bea Richmond Memorial 5K walk/run. On April 5, they will sponsor the second Bea Richmond Memorial 5K walk/run. The event, said Camp Verde Kiwanis boardmember Pat Schultz, "combines those precepts of healthy living and supporting music in our local schools.
"Music plays an important part, both emotionally and academically, in children's development," Schultz also said. "Music programs may help develop gifts which provide enjoyment for a lifetime."
At 8 a.m. Saturday, participants can check in and park at the Ramada next to Fort Verde State Park for the 3.1-mile trek. Shuttle service will be available from the Ramada to the start of the race at Copper Canyon Trailhead, where the event will begin at 9 a.m. Participants will walk and/or run from the trailhead to Oasis Drive, down Salt Mine Road to State Route 260 to the traffic signal at Main Street, then continue down Main Street and finish back at the Ramada.
According to Lynn Sweitzer, the 5K walk/run is "a very important" event for the community's youth.
"The Kiwanis' main focus is children," said Sweitzer, Camp Verde Kiwanis treasurer and this year's event co-chair. "And this project encompasses both the physical activities as well as helping the music programs in all of the Camp Verde schools."
Money collected from the 5K walk/run will go to Camp Verde schools through the Camp Verde Kiwanis Children's Music Program. The cost to enter the 5K walk/run is $20 (or a minimum $20 in pledges) for adults, $10 (or a minimum $10 in pledges) for children ages 12 and younger.
With registration, each participant will receive a ticket for prize drawing. Prizes include gift certificates from local businesses, quilts, tote bags and tool kits. Each child who signs up for the event will receive a T-shirt provided by various local businesses.
Registration forms can be picked up at Camp Verde Parks and Recreation, Camp Verde Community Library and American Heritage Academy. For people not interested in participating in the walk/run, donations are also accepted. For more information, or for registration and pledge sheets, contact Lynn Sweitzer at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (928) 567-3010.

I know that the Bea Richmond walk is an amazing community event. I would also like to remind everyone that they can directly benefit school programs by making a donation to to the public/charter schools extracurricular activities such as band, music, arts, sports and other programs-$400 for couples or $200 for individuals. This is a direct tax credit which goes to the school program of YOUR choice and keeps those funds local! Help you local public/charter schools by donating today.
