CAMP VERDE - Kip Maynard of Rimrock always preferred cake to pie.
"I was never a fan of the pie crust," says Kip, whose wife Jill Maynard is the kindergarten teacher at United Christian School. "But I like this one."
Several years ago, the Maynards received a pie crust recipe from a friend.
Kip now likes pie. He likes it so much that for the past eight years he has made pies for United Christian School's annual holiday pie sale, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in front of Bashas' in Camp Verde.
"This is a very manageable pie crust recipe," says Kip. "And it has good flavor."
Kip usually makes peach, apple, cherry and blueberry pies. Each year, Kip also makes a mixed fruit pie with blueberries and cherries for a friend from Clarkdale. This year, Kip says he plans to bake 18 pies.
Besides making pies for the school's annual bake sale, Kip also makes them for the holidays.
"I make them for family gatherings now," Kip says. "Christmas, Easter, any time we do something special. And some of the people at our church prefer pie."
Nancy Alstrom, the school's lunch ministry coordinator, says she has never baked a pie. But this year, Alstrom baked two Dutch apple pies for the school.
"It will be an experience to see if I can make a pie," Alstrom says.
For 19 years, United Christian School has held the bake sale to raise money for the school's general fund. Parents and staff bake the pies and participate in the sale.
This year, Principal Kathy Becker made five pies for the sale. Becker says she is not very good at baking.
"But I worked at it," she says.
