The University of Arizona V Bar V Ranch headquartered in Rimrock will hold its annual Ranch Explorers Day, Saturday, August 24, at Mahan Park, a forest meadow on the ranch near Happy Jack, where the cowboys gather and wean the V Bar V Ranch calves every fall.
Spend a day at the V Bar V Ranch, learn what the University of Arizona does there, and enjoy a V Bar V Ranch beef pit barbecue lunch with Dutch oven cobbler dessert, while listening to bluegrass music by the Verde Valley MusicMakers.
Ranch Explorers Day participants may drive to the site or catch a bus in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Sedona, Cottonwood, or Camp Verde. Transportation is included in the registration fee.
This year, ranch personnel will present "The V Bar V Ranch: Connecting Animal, Range, and Human Health."
The program will include a talk by Dr. John Marchello, from the UA Food Products and Safety Lab, on Food Safety - Past and Future, and a presentation by Dr. Peder Cuneo, from the University of Arizona Vet Diagnostic Laboratory, on Herd Health and the Arizona Livestock Incident Response Team (ALIRT). The V Bar V Range Management team will lead native plant walks and hands-on rangeland monitoring activities. A local horse trainer will demonstrate the stages of progressive horse training. And, the V Bar V Ranch Chuckwagon cook will show how the V Bar V beef lunch is barbecued in a pit and demonstrate how he makes his famous Dutch oven cobblers!
Cost to attend Ranch Explorers Day is $30 for adults and $15 for students, and includes lunch and the bus ride. Participants may also drive to the site.
