Expect 800 bicyclists on Verde Valley roads this weekend
2013 Bike MS: Ride the Vortex

Nearly 800 cyclists from around the state will ride various routes ranging from 30 to 100 miles in and around Sedona and Cottonwood at the 2013 Bike MS: Ride the Vortex.

The event is May 18-19. Cycling begins each day at 7 p.m. at the Verde Valley Fairgrounds, 800 E. Cherry St., Cottonwood.

Bike MS is Arizona's premier bike ride and part of the nation's largest cycling series supported by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The largest single fund-raising event for the Arizona Multiple Sclerosis Society raised more than $600,000 last year for MS research and support services.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers to be alert for bicyclists traveling along the shoulders of state highways throughout the Verde Valley this weekend.

Drivers can expect to see bicycle riders on State Route 89A and SR 179. Minimal delays are expected but ADOT suggests drivers be prepared for possibly slower vehicular traffic flow.

State law requires a vehicle to maintain a three-foot gap when passing a bicycle on a roadway.

Sedona City Manager Tim Ernster and Cottonwood City Manager Doug Bartosh are in a friendly competition to see who can ride the most miles. Top rider gets a tour and lunch at Javelina Leap Winery. After they recover, they'll serve meals together to the hungry and homeless at Sedona Community Food Bank and the Old Town Mission in Cottonwood.
