Who's going, who's staying at Camp Verde School District

CAMP VERDE -- It's the time of year when stayings and goings at public schools are determined, and Camp Verde Unified School District has a line in both directions.

At Tuesday's scheduled meeting, the board will discuss personnel contracts for all administrators, teachers and staff. Up for renewal are contracts for Administrator-in-Charge Amber Lee, High School Principal/CTE Director Bob Weir, CVHS Dean of Students Mark Showers, Middle School Principal Danny Howe, Elementary School Principal Debi Pottorff, South Verde Principal Steve King, ELL/Grants Coordinator Steve Hicks, Support Services Director Stacey Barker, Food Services Director Ida Pieratt and Technology Director Aaron Moya.

At the same meeting, but on the consent agenda, are the departures of several staff members. They include CVHS woods instructor Jeff Neugebauer (effective end of contract), CVMS teacher Amy Roberts (effective end of contract), CVES teacher Dixie Blanchard (effective end of contract), CVES teacher Tressa Wagner (effective end of contract), CVES teacher Ellen Lagasse (effective end of contract) and CVMS teacher Kambrah Allsup (effective end of contract).

With resignations already in effect are Business Services Director Janet Leuer (as of April 5) and School Nurse Nadia Applegate (as of April 1). The district is offering employment to Pat Kaminsky as the temporary school nurse. At Tuesday's meeting, the governing board will hear a report on the replacement plan for the business manager.

Cafeteria worker Socorro Cota's departure is effective May 24, and CVES computer lab paraprofessional Sandra McIntyre is also leaving.

All departures are listed under resignations/releases/retirements.

On the "action" agenda are the contracts for certified and classified staff.

Lee will give an update on the 2013-14 budget and recommended cuts. There will also be a review of the annual audit report.

The regular meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the district library in the Multi-Use Complex, 280 Camp Lincoln Road. Prior to that meeting, at 5:30 p.m. there will be work session on budget priorities.

The Middle school is the one they need to clean house in!!!! That school does nothing about bullying!!!! Mr. Howe could not care less about the students being bullied only what they wear---He needs to go now---

Debbie Pottorff is a good principal and I am glad to have her as principal of my 4 kids. Why didn't you put your name on your comment or do you just like hiding behind anonymity while trashing people.

Thanks for your kind words TJ. They are truly appreciated! I have loved my time working with the kids of Camp Verde and it has been a pleasure to work with second and yes, even a few third generation of students.

Always a tense time of year in any school district. My hope is that the district continues to move forward in improving not only itself, but its reputation. Many people have worked countless hours there to try to improve things for the kids and in the past, shot down, beat down by the political madness of Camp Verde. Its sad to attend some sporting events and hear other communities have nothing nice to say about Camp Verde. Its a great place and there are some great employees at this district. Some who I may disagree with how they obtained their positions in the past...but that's neither here nor there....the past is the past, move forward. The one thing I believe is an insult in my opinion is giving Mrs. Lee the title of "Administrator in Charge"...has she not proven her worth??? She's been there many years and prior to this position has built a dynamic Special Education program for the district. Her education exceeds the requirements for the title she well deserves of Superintendent. I think some members of the board need to let go of their arrogance, get off their high horse and give people what they deserve and have worked so hard for. Additionally, a good school and place of employment for that matter, begins from the top down. With that....Governing Board....I hope you are working WITH the staff and not against the staff by demeaning them or feeding into any negativity that is brought to you by community members. Remember YOU were voted in by your local taxpayers who EXPECT that you will do a good and fair job and that includes treating our district staff with respect and kindness....with your actions....others will follow and the reputation of Camp Verde may be replenished to what it once was and still really is....a great place to go to school and a great place to reside. Congratulations to all of those who are retiring, thank you, you have done an outstanding job for our students! Congratulations and good luck to those who are proceeding to other exciting endeavors, you will be sorely missed and thank you for all you have done for our kids!

Mrs Blanchard is retiring? Wow she was teaching when I went to school here in the 70's and 80's, what a wonderful teacher she is and was, and a very nice person to boot, CVES will be loosing one of the best teacher that have ever graced the campus in my opinion, enjoy your retirement Mrs Blanchard.

Mrs. Pottorff is a fair, caring, professional, hard working principal that will always go the extra mile for our children, parents and staff. As Truly Shocked mentioned, if we look back to prior years leadership, I'm sure most will agree, the school has become a wonderful place for any child to receive their education. One person's opinion is exactly that...ONE person. CVUSD will have lost a valuable asset the day Mrs. Pottorff leaves.

How anyone could have anything negative to say against Mrs. Pottorff is beyond me. There have been many principals at CVES over the years. Mrs. Pottorff is by far the best. Her primary interest is ALWAYS the children. She is calm and exceedingly fair in her dealings with them, the staff, and parents. The elementary school runs smoothly, and the children get a good education. She is an outstanding example of what a good principal can do for a school that had been struggling under less skilled leadership.

I do believe Mrs. Portoff and the rest of the teachers do the best they can to support students in the school. The problems are not with them but a system that does not allow them to do what they are trained for---teach! My dealings with Mrs. Portoff have been very positive, Stacey Barker on the other hand seemed to have the bus drivers best interest in mind rather than the children------The Aims testing needs to go!

"Effective end of contract" makes it sound like those who are leaving are all getting fired. We're not! Some are retiring and moving to be closer to family. As far as the comment about CVES Principal, I have been so AMAZED at what a fantastic job Mrs. Pottorff has done and continues to do at the Elementary school. You can ask anyone who works for her they will tell you how much she cares for the staff and students and acts fair and professional to all. I am sad to be leaving such a wonderful school. It is amazing what is accomplished there with less and less resources from the state, and less and less support from the community who are quick to judge and slow to help. I would encourage people who have concerns about the school to get involved: donate your tax credit money, volunteer, etc. You might just be surprised!

After 39 years at Camp Verde Elementary I have decided to retire. I have seen many administrators at the district and site level come and go.

Mrs. Pottorff has always had our students and staff as her first prority. Many, many parents have commented on the welcoming environment that she has established at the elementary school.

She has to keep in mind the welfare of ALL the students in a class or school and we have students who seek to disrupt the education of others. They are always dealt with in a fair and consistent manner.

Unless you have volunteered and put in time at the school to understand all that teachers and the administrator have to deal with it becomes very easy to be critical.

Everyone at the elementary school is there because they care about kids---ALL of them.

My concerns are with the nutrition services and the so called accommodation class those items I believe need to be looked at very closely.

Mrs. Lee, Mr. Weir, Mr. Showers, and above all Mr. King deserve to stay, their performance is excellent.
Mr. Barker, not so much.
The rest I have no basis for a valid opinion on.

Until they stop making Aims the priority non of then can do their jobs and put our children first! They spend too much time on it and the pressure is high on all, mostly the children! Why can't we let the teachers just teach?

I hope they seriously consider not renewing CVES Principal Debbe Pottorff's contract. We need someone in there that will stand up for the children and make them their priority. As far as my dealings with Ms. Pottorff go, she has not showed that she is an advocate for my childs education! We need a fresh new person in there!
