CAMP VERDE - For the last 13 years the salary for Camp Verde Town Council members has remained at $50 a month.

To be precise it is not nor has it ever been intended as a salary. It is a stipend first issued in 2000, to cover the expenses incidental to their service to the community.

But Town Manager Russ Martin says he believes it is time to consider raising the stipend and begin considering the notion of a salary.

"The responsibilities of the council seem to grow every year, especially considering that Camp Verde is taking an active role in the region, and I am of the belief that if we are going to ask more of them we need to consider a greater compensation.

"As it currently stands the $50 doesn't even come close to covering expenses. It's less than the cost of one tank of gas, yet we expect them to be involved in activities that take them around the valley and across the state," he says.

Martin says he believes part of the reason more people don't choose to serve on the council is because of the compensation package.

To that end he will have a discussion at Wednesday's council session, asking the council for their input and possibly a suggestion as to how much they feel would be justified.

According to a survey made by the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, Cottonwood council members receive $500 a month, Sedona council members $450 a month and their respective mayors, $750 and $650.

Martin says he is suggesting the council consider compensation of at least half what those communities now offer.

In other actions the council is expected to issue a call for a vote on the merger of the Camp Verde Sanitary District and the Town of Camp Verde during the March 12 primary election.

I have a couple of Questions... 1. What is the reason for this merger? 2. With this merger will everyone in Camp Verde be using the the sewage services that they pay for OR will they still pay for services they don't receive? I am not sure I am ready to vote yes until these can be answered.

I have no issue with the council members being given a stipend as they do alot for the community and travel to represent our town. However, I believe employees pay was frozen years ago and merit increases frozen.

Thaw those things first then give your stipend. There are some good people working for the Town that have been there a long time and work very hard. Some have two and three jobs just make their mortgage payment.
